The things I like about social media are...
Things I like social media for are -
Watching people get hurt doing stupid shit (yes I’m a bad person)
Watching mind-blowing science videos
Watching dogs do stupid shit
Sharing those with friends
I do check it out for other bits and pieces but mostly it’s just the above.
And that’s the problem with social media…they're all entertainment channels.
When you’re posting on social media you’re battling for people's attention with the the shit that makes them laugh.
And 9/10 that’s a battle you’re gonna lose.
They might see your post.
They might even stop and look at the reel.
But they’re very unlikely to even hit the like button never mind sharing the reel with their mates or leaving a comment.
Now, this isn’t me saying that you shouldn’t post on your socials, not at all. But you do need to remember that it’s a numbers game.
You need to be posting 7 days a week to stand a chance of your followers paying much attention to even a single post.
The average post on IG reaches about 25% of your followers.
That means they see it NOT that they read it or watch it.
The average engagement is way lower at 2%.
I mean that’s like talking to an empty room.
Now, compare that to email and the difference is stark.
95% of your subscribers will see the email and around 25% will read your words of wisdom.
Not only that but you segment your list so that your most active readers get all your best material.
Now you’re having a chat down the pub with your mates.
Meaning you’ve a much better chance of having an impact with email.
Not only that, you only need to send your emails out a couple of times a week.
Having said all of this I’m not completely shitting on social media and I do think it’s part and parcel of your lead gen ecosystem.
One of the best ways to make use of your social media is to try out ideas.
Then look at the ones that do well and take the idea and turn it into an email.
That allows you to add a layer of nuance to the subject that is missing in your IG post. You can provide more context to your thoughts and provide a greater insight into what working with you might be like.
So, to finish off.
Don’t neglect your emails.
People might have found out about you on your IG profile but if they don’t keep clicking on your posts you’ll disappear from their feed.
But regardless of whether or not they opened your email today it’ll still be there when they look at their inbox tomorrow.
Later
